Grade 40, 60, or 80: Choosing the Right Rebar for Your Project

Reinforcement grades exist because structures make different demands. Matching the grade to the load — rather than defaulting to habit — produces safer structures and better economics. Here's how the three grades compare, and where each belongs.

ASTM A615 Grade 40 — general construction

With a yield strength of 40,000 PSI (≈280 MPa) and the highest workability of the range, Grade 40 is the practical choice for residential foundations, slabs, footings, boundary walls, and light general construction. It cuts and bends easily on site, in sizes #3–#6.

ASTM A615 Grade 60 — the commercial standard

At 60,000 PSI (≈420 MPa), Grade 60 is the industry standard for commercial buildings, high-rise frames, and general load-bearing structures. It offers the balance of strength and economy that most projects specify, in sizes #3–#18.

ASTM A706 Grade 80 — seismic and heavy structural

At 80,000 PSI (≈550 MPa), Grade 80 delivers a third more strength than Grade 60 — fewer bars, less congestion in heavily reinforced members.

But the standard matters as much as the number: A706 imposes controls that A615 does not — yield ratio limits, overstrength protection (94 ksi max), higher elongation minimums, and chemistry controlled for weldability. In an active seismic zone, these are the properties that let reinforcement yield in a stable, predictable way through repeated loading. AFCO is the first and only producer of ASTM A706 Grade 80 in Pakistan.

Three questions that decide the grade

  1. What's the load? Light residential loads sit comfortably on Grade 40; load-bearing frames call for Grade 60 and above.
  2. What's the span and congestion? Long spans and dense reinforcement favour higher grades — fewer, stronger bars.
  3. What's the seismic demand? Where reinforcement is expected to deform inelastically in an earthquake, specify A706 Grade 80.
