Why A706

Why AFCO chooses ASTM A706 Grade 80 for seismic Pakistan.

Pakistan lies in an active seismic zone, where reinforcing steel must provide not only strength, but ductility and reliable performance under earthquake-induced cyclic loading.

Strength alone is not enough

ASTM A706 Grade 80 and ASTM A615 Grade 80 both provide a nominal yield strength of 80 ksi (≈550 MPa). Seismic safety, however, depends on predictable post-yield behaviour and deformation capacity — not yield strength alone.

Ductility & cyclic performance

A706 Grade 80 includes limits on yield variability, yield-to-ultimate strength ratio, and minimum elongation. These controls ensure stable yielding and adequate strain capacity during repeated seismic loading. A615 Grade 80 imposes no equivalent ductility controls, and may exhibit limited deformation capacity in seismic conditions.

Capacity-design reliability

Seismic design relies on controlled yielding of reinforcement to form plastic hinges and prevent brittle failure. A706 Grade 80 provides more predictable yielding and reduced overstrength, aligning it with seismic capacity-design principles.

Weldability & code acceptance

A706 specifies controlled chemical composition, improving weldability for welded splices and prefabricated reinforcement cages. In seismic regions A706 Grade 80 is explicitly recognised and commonly required where reinforcement is expected to undergo inelastic deformation, while A615 Grade 80 is often restricted in ductile seismic systems.

AFCO Steel Industries intentionally manufactures ASTM A706 Grade 80 to deliver controlled ductility, reliable cyclic performance, predictable seismic behaviour, and safer weldability for reinforced concrete structures in seismic regions such as Pakistan.
